Highlights of the Pension Coverage Survey 2002

  • Total Pension Coverage of those in employment is 50.7% – of which Occupational Pension Coverage is 35.2%
    – Personal Pension Coverage is 12.6%
    – Both types of pension coverage is 2.9%
  • Occupational Pension Scheme Coverage is 46.8%
    – of which coverage for males is 51.7% and for females is 41.5%.
  • Personal Pension Coverage is 44.0%
    – of which coverage for males is 46.9% and for females is 30.8%
  • Occupational Pension Scheme Coverage for employees who usually work between 1-9 hours per week is 4.7% and for employees who usually work between 35-39 hours per week is 54.4%
  • Personal Pension Coverage for self-employed persons who usually work between 1-9 hours per week is 9.0% and for self-employed persons who usually work between 35-39 hours per week is 44.2%
    Occupational Pension Scheme Coverage for professional persons is 67.2%
    – of which coverage for males is 68.5%
    – and for females is 65.6%
  • Occupational Pension Scheme coverage for plant and machine operatives is 46.3%
    – of which coverage for males is 47.8%
    – and for females is 42.3%
  • 70.2% of organisations with 500+ employees have occupational pension scheme coverage and 41.2% of organisations with between 50-99 employees have such coverage.
  • 13.0% of male members of occupational pension schemes make Additional Voluntary Contributions (AVC’s) and 9.4% of females members make such contributions.
  • 4.3% of members of occupational pension schemes aged between 20-24 make AVC’s while 15.9% of members aged between 55-69 make such contributions.
  • 1.3% of persons in employment are in receipt of a retirement pension other than the state pension.
  • 3.1% of persons in employment have a deferred pension entitlement from a previous job.
